Registration Requirements - Reduced Registration How to Qualify

Reduced registration allows students who have completed all the credits towards a degree, but still need to continue to work on research to complete a thesis, to register part time, but maintain full time student status.

  • Students on reduced registration do not get reduced tuition
  • Students on reduced registration pay for the number of credits registered

Reduced registration will benefit students in the following categories who need to be considered full-time students:

  • International students
  • Students on RA/TA contracts, hourly contracts or fellowships
  • Students on financial aid or wishing to defer financial aid payments

To qualify students must:

1) Be admitted into a Master’s thesis or PhD program

2) Have submitted the following forms:

MS THESIS STUDENTS:

Submit Degree Audit form (must have approved committee form on file with OGS) and indicate on the form that they want to be on Reduced Registration by:

May 1 for fall semester reduced registration

November 1 for spring semester reduced registration

PHD STUDENTS:

Submit Degree Audit form (must have approved committee form on file with OGS) and indicate on the form that they want to be on Reduced Registration by:

May 1 for fall semester reduced registration

November 1 for spring semester reduced registration

Submit Admission to Candidacy form and indicate on the form that they want to be on Reduced Registration by:

First day of class for the semester in which the student wants to be on Reduced Registration.

3) Students must meet credit hour requirements

Ph.D. students must have completed 72 hours of course and research credits combined and have paid for 54 credits*. These credits may include any transfer credits a student is using towards the degree.

M.S. students must have completed 36 hours of course and research credits combined and have paid for 27 credits*. These credits may include any transfer credits a student is using towards the degree.

*Paid credits are any credits 1-9. Credits 10-15 are considered free credits, because the student is not charged any additional tuition and fees.   So, when counting paid credits you may only count a maximum of 9 credits per semester, if even the student took more than 9 credits.

Once a student qualifies for Reduced Registration, the student must register correctly. Students who qualify for Reduced Registration, but fail to register correctly will not be put on Reduced Registration.

All students who qualify for Reduced Registration will receive an email with registration instructions. If a student doesn't get an email, but thinks (s)he should qualify, the student must contact either Suzanne Beach or Roxane Aungst with the Office of Graduate Studies.
